Small business certifications are the result of conditions public funders place on contract dollars. Take advantage of those that best match your line of business.
District of Columbia
Is the primary location of your business in the District of Columbia? If so, CBE certification is a great advantage in competing for DC Government contracts funded with DC local tax dollars, and on many large-scale private development projects. Consult the DSLBD website.
If your DC small business can participate in large-scale civil engineering and heavy construction projects and is minority- or woman-owned, you may benefit from the DDOT (District Department of Transportation)/WMATA (Metro) DBE Certification. If your business is located in another state, is DBE-certified there, and has benefited from DBE goals there, consider certifying with DDOT and WMATA. It’s a joint certification, so you may certify though either DDOT or WMATA. The DBE certification applies to projects funded by federal-aid grants, where state agencies and quasi-governmental agencies (transit systems, airports, ports authorities) get federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Note: Many government agencies and nonprofits provide help with business administrative issues and financing for free or at little cost. Look here.
