6th Annual DBE Summit – September 30, 2016

The 6th Annual Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Summit is an opportunity to hear about upcoming District Department of Transportation (DDOT) projects and to network with DBE firms, other small businesses, prime contractors in heavy construction and civil engineering, and DDOT project managers.

There will also be three industry-related concurrent workshops: Construction Contractors Workshop, Architecture/Engineering Professional Services and Doing Business with DDOT. Additional information on these workshops will be provided.

Equitable Bike Share Systems

Despite stereotypes, most bicycle commuters are working class, often minority members. That doesn’t seem true of most bike share system members, however. Bike share designers are seeking to address the inequity, as seen in this Better Bike Share Conference video by Streetfilms and NACTO.

Bikeshare is Safer

As of February 2016, there were 46 bike-share systems operating in the USA, with 2,655 bike-share stations providing links to transit stops, reports US DOT. NACTO recently released useful guidance on bike share station placement, but system safety is also an asset when informing officials and the public about this mode. Bike-share users have taken more than 35 million trips with a remarkable safety record. Vox has a breezy, useful video:

CBO: The FAST Act and Budgetary Treatment of Financing

A presentation developed by Sarah Puro, Principal Analyst in the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Budget Analysis Division, for the Annual Conference of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts. It explains how infrastructure  finance investments might be considered part of the federal budget. Given this, we can anticipate that transportation project budgets financed in this manner will be subject to federal DBE and Workforce Development provisions.
